Is raw vintage Pokémon rising too? What matched sales show

Check whether a vintage Pokémon price move applies to your collection by comparing exact cards, raw condition, PSA grades, dated sold prices, and the gaps in the evidence.

The short answer

Some sampled raw vintage copies now show higher same-condition medians in our October 8 follow-up. That supports a limited finding for those exact cards and conditions, but coverage is still too thin to establish a broad raw-vintage rally or that raw cards are following slabs at the same pace. Compare the same card, printing, condition or grade across the same dates.

Key takeaways

  • Compare the same card, language, edition, finish, and condition before calculating a price change.
  • A raw headline price can mix conditions. Unknown-condition sales cannot establish an LP or HP trend.
  • PSA 8, PSA 9, and PSA 10 are separate comparisons; a result for one does not answer for the others.
  • Missing or thin evidence means the trend is unavailable. It does not mean the card has no value or no buyers.

1. What does “vintage is booming” actually mean?

A collector with a childhood binder has a practical question: does the excitement around vintage include their worn cards, or does it mainly describe expensive slabs? A recent collector discussion asked exactly that, naming Aquapolis Houndoom holos, Legend Maker Gengar reverse holos, Rocket’s Mewtwo ex, and Skyridge Snorlax. The comments disagreed. Their experiences are a reason to investigate, rather than a measured market result.

A useful answer must name both the market and the period. English WotC cards, EX-era cards, near-mint raw copies, and PSA 10s are different groups. Even within one group, a handful of popular cards can move while others do not. A claim about “all vintage” needs a defined sample across sets, prices, and conditions, rather than a few winners selected after they rose.

2. Match the price to the copy you actually own

Record the set, printed number, language, edition, and finish first. Aquapolis Houndoom H11/H32 is different from Houndoom 14/147 or 15/147. Legend Maker Gengar 5/92 has a standard holo and a stamped reverse-holo printing. Skyridge Snorlax 100/144 has normal and reverse-holo versions. A name alone leaves important parts of the price unresolved.

Then separate near mint, lightly played, moderately played, heavily played, and damaged raw copies. Do not turn a printed “70 HP” in a listing title into a heavily played condition label: it may describe the Pokémon’s hit points. A sale without a reliable condition label stays unknown. Seller condition labels are reported descriptions, not an independent inspection of the card.

For graded cards, keep the grading company, numeric grade, qualifiers, and exact printing fixed. An ungraded card described as mint is not an observed PSA 10. Grading could produce a different result, and its costs are separate from the raw card’s current market price.

3. Expanded follow-up: common vintage cards and matched conditions

For English unlimited Base Set Charizard 4/102, the LP sample’s delivered median moved from $438.45 in August 9 through September 7 to $534.99 in September 8 through October 7, a +22.0% change. That comparison uses 6 and 7 distinct sales. It is evidence for one seller-described condition on one exact card, rather than a result for all played vintage.

We expanded the audit to 11 exact English holo cards: Base Set Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur; Jungle Snorlax; Fossil Gengar; Team Rocket Dark Charizard; Neo Genesis Lugia; Neo Discovery Umbreon; Neo Revelation Suicune; Aquapolis Houndoom; and Rocket’s Mewtwo ex. We keep the standard unlimited edition fixed where edition applies. The follow-up reviewed 1,368 saved sold records, including targeted NM, LP, and MP refreshes and separate PSA 9 and PSA 10 searches. This popular-card convenience basket is not representative of every vintage card or the EX era.

The expanded comparison uses June 10 through August 8 and August 9 through October 7, two completed 60-day UTC periods. A separate 30-day comparison retains the dates of the initial study. We use at least five distinct eBay item IDs per condition or grade in each period, known item price plus shipping in USD, complete seller feedback, current pricing filters, and a manual check for conflicting condition labels or reprint titles. The source-comps download makes the contributing records inspectable.

A higher median in a small sample is descriptive evidence for that exact row. It is not proof of a broad market rally or a prediction. Check the number of sellers and sale dates: five sales clustered on one day are a much thinner baseline than sales spread across the period. Removing a few low-feedback sellers or resolving uncertain conditions can change a thin result substantially.

The table separates raw conditions from PSA grades. Even if a raw row and a PSA row both rise, compare their own percentage changes and coverage before saying they rose at the same pace. HP and damaged copies remain outside this headline-price sample, and unknown conditions do not establish a played-card trend.

Expanded follow-up: 11 exact cards reviewed

The 60-day comparison supports a raw-condition change for 1 cards, a PSA-grade change for 0 cards, and both formats for 0 cards. Missing comparisons stay unavailable.

Small samples and concentrated sale dates can make these changes fragile. Condition labels come from sellers, and qualifying for this table does not establish High confidence. Mixed labels such as LP-PL or EX/LP stay unknown. Pricing filters can omit genuinely worn copies or unusually low sales.

Five sales in each period are required for a descriptive change. HP and damaged copies remain outside the headline-price sample. Unknown raw condition is not assigned to NM, LP, or MP. The CSV also includes the separate 30-day comparison.

4. The initial two-card check: raw conditions and PSA grades

The table below is an October 8, 2026 snapshot of stored sold records for two exact English cards. It compares August 9 through September 7 with September 8 through October 7, two adjacent periods of 30 completed calendar days using UTC dates. October 8 is excluded because the audit day is not complete. Only included records that pass the current deterministic listing filters are eligible. This is a limited case study of our evidence coverage, not a census of eBay sales or an index of the vintage market.

We require at least five distinct condition-matched or grade-matched sales in each period before displaying a percentage change. The median uses item price plus known shipping in USD and excludes sales with incomplete seller-feedback evidence. Five sales is a minimum for a descriptive comparison, not a guarantee of a representative sample or a High-confidence valuation. Unknown-condition records are counted separately and never assigned to NM, LP, MP, HP, or damaged.

There are not enough comparable records in this snapshot to publish a trend for either card. Standard raw-price filters also exclude severely played and damaged titles, so HP and damaged rows are outside this headline-price sample. Those gaps prevent a conclusion about worn binder copies; they do not establish that those copies are flat or worthless.

No supported price change in this audited sample

Five matched sales in each period are required to publish a change. These records do not establish a raw-vintage rally or a graded-card advantage.

Snapshot of reviewed stored records, not complete market volume. Medians are delivered USD prices where the sample supports them. Unknown-condition sales stay unassigned. HP and damaged rows are outside the standard headline-price sample. A refresh timestamp does not establish a new transaction. PSA 1 through 7 are not covered.

5. What we still need before answering for a whole binder

The Legend Maker Gengar stamped reverse-holo example needs a listing-filter review before we use it in a comparison. Our audit found that a correctly described reverse-holo title is rejected by the current matching rules. We have withheld that comparison rather than substituting the standard holo. Skyridge Snorlax also remains unresolved for the original collector because the post did not specify its finish.

PSA 8 is one lower-grade comparison with PSA 10, but it does not stand for PSA 1 through 7. Those grades need their own exact sales. Neither the initial two-card study nor the expanded convenience basket settles a claim about every vintage set, the EX era, or every card in a childhood collection.

A refreshed price alone is not evidence of appreciation. Check the dates of the underlying transactions. Historical sales remain dated historical evidence even if an estimate is calculated today, and missing recent sales leave the current comparison unanswered.

6. Read a trend without confusing price, condition, and demand

Compare medians from equal periods, alongside sale counts and the latest sale date. Inspect the actual listings when a move looks surprising. A period with more clean copies can show a higher mixed raw median even if LP prices have not changed. One unusually expensive sale, a mislabeled slab, a lot, or an unresolved accepted-offer price can also distort the result.

Keep asking prices separate. A seller increasing an ask establishes their expectation; a completed, well-matched sale establishes an observed transaction. Sale counts describe the activity captured in the evidence, and a first-page search can miss transactions. Do not interpret a thin captured sample as complete market volume.

For a broader report, define the basket before measuring the result and keep WotC and EX-era groups separate. Report how many sampled cards rose, fell, or lacked enough evidence. Leaving missing rows out of the headline percentage can make a narrow group of winners look like a broad rally.

7. How to use CollectAIO for your childhood cards

Search or scan a card, confirm the suggested identity, and choose its exact variant. Record its condition conservatively when adding it to your collection. Open the sold evidence and price-history source details before treating the headline value as a price for your particular copy.

CollectAIO can help inspect exact variants, dated sold comps, active supply, and pricing confidence. Condition-specific raw values currently have limited pilot coverage, and a generic raw headline does not automatically answer for every condition. If the comparison you need is absent, retain an unknown trend and identify the missing condition or grade rather than applying a fixed discount from NM or a premium slab.

For a potential sale, distinguish a gross market estimate from what you might receive after fees, shipping, and the convenience discount of selling a collection together. Collecting enjoyment and a market-return claim are separate decisions. None of these comparisons predicts which format will appreciate next.

8. Frequently asked questions

Is raw vintage Pokémon rising right now?

Some sampled raw vintage copies now show higher same-condition medians in our October 8 follow-up. That supports a limited finding for those exact cards and conditions, but coverage is still too thin to establish a broad raw-vintage rally or that raw cards are following slabs at the same pace. Compare the same card, printing, condition or grade across the same dates.

Can LP or HP cards rise even if they remain cheaper than NM?

Yes. A lower price level and a price change are different measurements. But an LP or HP trend must be measured from that condition’s own comparable sales. A rise in a mixed raw headline or an NM copy does not establish it.

Are PSA 8s and PSA 9s following PSA 10 prices?

We cannot establish that from the audited sample. Compare the same card, finish, grading company, and grade across equal periods. Price ratios between grades today do not establish how each grade changed over time.

Does “insufficient evidence” mean nobody is buying?

No. It means our reviewed records do not support the stated comparison. Missing coverage, stale sales, uncertain condition, incomplete feedback, or too few matched transactions can all leave a trend unavailable.

Should I grade my played vintage cards because high grades are getting attention?

A high-grade headline does not establish a grading decision for a played card. Compare its current raw evidence with realistic outcomes for that exact card and include submission, shipping, and selling costs. Do not assume your copy will receive a particular grade.
