The grading premium is a market result, not a fixed formula
A PSA 10 can command more than a raw copy because certification reduces uncertainty and a gem-grade population may be scarcer than the total card supply. The amount varies by card. Centering difficulty, print defects, surface sensitivity, population, visual appeal, set popularity, and buyer demand can create a large premium on one Ohtani card and a modest premium on another.
The correct comparison uses the same year, set, card number, and parallel. A PSA 10 Refractor cannot establish the premium for a base Chrome card. A rare autograph cannot establish it for Topps flagship. Likewise, a raw listing described as “gem mint” is still raw until a grading company authenticates and assigns a grade.

What creates or destroys a PSA 10 premium?
Centering and print quality
Modern cards can still have off-centering, surface lines, dimples, edge issues, or print defects. A difficult gem rate can support a premium when demand is real.
Population and supply
A high PSA 10 population does not automatically eliminate demand, but a growing supply can pressure the premium. Population should be read alongside sales velocity.
Card-specific demand
Iconic photos, flagship status, rookie recognition, scarce parallels, and autographs attract different buyers. Ohtani popularity alone does not make each card equally liquid.
Comp quality
Use completed sales for the same card and grade. Reject qualifiers, wrong parallels, lots, damaged slabs, mislabeled cards, and sales with unclear authenticity.
Fees and turnaround
Grading cost includes service fees, insured shipping, time, and the chance that the card returns below the target grade. Compare expected net outcomes, not just gross PSA 10 value.
Downside at PSA 9
A submission decision should include the likely value at PSA 9 or lower. If a PSA 9 sells near raw value, the PSA 10 upside may not compensate for cost and risk.
When grading may make sense
- The exact card has a meaningful and well-supported PSA 10 premium.
- A careful inspection shows strong centering, clean surfaces, sharp corners, and clean edges.
- The lower-grade outcome is acceptable after fees and time.
- Certification improves liquidity or buyer trust for the intended sale.
When keeping it raw may be better
- The card has visible flaws or uncertain authenticity.
- The PSA 10 premium is based on one outlier or too few sales.
- PSA 9 value sits below the all-in grading cost and raw alternative.
- The collector values the card for a binder or personal display and does not need certification.
PSA publishes its own grading standards. Those standards explain the grade definitions, but only the grading company can determine the grade of a submitted card.
